SEO title and meta description checker

Type or paste a page title and meta description to see their approximate pixel widths, whether they are likely to be cut off in Google results on desktop and phones, and simple wording issues. Everything updates as you type, in your browser.

Or extract them from page HTML

Why pixels, not characters

Google shortens titles and snippets by their rendered width, not by a character count, so "WWW" uses far more room than "iii". This checker estimates widths from the published glyph widths of Arial, the font Google uses for desktop results: 20 px for titles and 14 px for descriptions.

Google does not publish a cut-off. Titles are commonly observed to be shortened around 600 px and descriptions around 920 px on desktop and 680 px on phones. Treat these as guides, not guarantees.

Google may rewrite them anyway

Google builds the title link and snippet it shows from several sources and often uses page text instead of the meta description when it better matches the search. A clear, accurate title and a description that summarises the page make it more likely yours is used, but there is no way to force it.

Example

"Invoice Automation Software for Agencies | Late Payment Reminders | Xero Sync | Example Ledger" is about 900 px wide and will be cut after "Late Payment". "Invoice automation for agencies | Example Ledger" fits and leaves the detail for the description.

Limitations

  • Widths are estimates: real rendering depends on the device, font smoothing and Google's layout, which changes.
  • It does not know what Google will actually show; Google rewrites many titles and snippets.
  • Emoji and non-Latin scripts are estimated roughly.
  • It does not check uniqueness across a site. Each page should have its own title and description.

Questions

How long should a title be?

Long enough to say what the page is, short enough to fit: roughly 50–60 characters of ordinary text often fits in about 600 px. Put the words that matter first.

How long should a meta description be?

There is no fixed limit; Google shortens snippets to fit the device. About 120–155 characters usually shows in full on desktop; phones show less.

Do titles and descriptions affect AI answers?

AI search features that draw on a search index may see the same title and text, but no assistant documents using the meta description specifically. Write them for people choosing a result.

Is my text sent anywhere?

No. The checks run in your browser.
